Download Day 2008

Yes, it's here. And from all reports it is the best Firefox yet. From the initial public beta releases a year ago, we've heard that the new Firefox is faster, but there are also a lot of other improvements in store. You can find more on just what the big deal is from this handy Field Guide.

Anyone who's had us work on their machine, knows that we have a strong preference for the Firefox browser, and if you've brought us an infected machine to clean up, we have undoubtedly installed Firefox (and transferred all your bookmarks) for increased protection as well as a generally better Internet experience. Go get the new one, try out some of the outstanding extensions, and enjoy!

This week's contribution to the theme is: Songbird

From the Songbird website:

"Songbird is a desktop media player mashed-up with the Web. Songbird is committed to playing the music you want, from the sites you want, on the devices you want, challenging the conventions of discovery, purchase, consumption and organization of music on the Internet."

This free software title is available for download from the above link, or you can stop into the shop and we can provide it on CD or, if you have a flash drive, we can copy it to that also. Apple Pulls a Fast One PDF Print E-mail

Finally, Steve Jobs gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar. As alerted to me today by this article at TechDirt, Apple has begun using the very popular iTunes software as a Trojan Horse to sneak the Safari browser on to Windows machines.

Last week, Apple apparently began distributing its Safari web browser to Windows users using the software update mechanism that comes with iTunes. ... What Apple is doing here is a little bit sleazy. Users who opt to download iTunes aren't necessarily interested in installing or running Safari, and so making installation the default is an abuse of the relationship between Apple and its customers.

Personally, I don't have anything against the Safari browser, but I do have a big problem with them installing software without the user's permission. Day in and day out we help our customers rid their computers of all sorts of resource-hogging programs they never asked for and will probably never use. Many of our customers have iTunes installed because they own an iPod and must have the software to work with it and to buy music from the iTunes music store. Most people don't know that every time they update iTunes, the software also installs Quicktime and tries to install not one, but two separate "updater" programs. Now that Apple is also having iTunes install Safari, unannounced, we're going to have to offer our customers some options.

First, to manage your music and playlists on your portable MP3 player, you have the choice of some nice, FREE, tools such as Anapod from Red Chair Software. The company offers a free 'trial' version that works just fine for most things, but also has sever different special products depending upon what type of iPod/MP3 Player you have.  Each of those paid package includes e-mail support and lifetime upgrades for the one-time fee.  Basically, we recommend using anything that will allow you to rip music to MP3 format rather than some proprietary format like Apple's AAC or RealPlayer.

If you'd like to know more, please stop in and ask.  Nathan and I would be happy to answer your questions and help you find the programs and tools that help to free you to do what you want with music you already own.
